The End of the Click? Why Local Businesses Must Focus on Being Remembered and Recommended

For nearly two decades, digital marketing revolved around one goal: clicks, baby clicks.

Rank higher. Drive traffic. Generate website visits.

Today, that playbook is changing. According to research highlighted by Search Engine Land, 68% of Google searches now end without a click to a website. Consumers are increasingly getting answers directly from Google through AI Overviews, featured snippets, maps, and other search features without ever visiting a company’s website.

At the same time, people are asking questions directly to ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI platforms. They’re looking for recommendations, comparing providers, and researching solutions without necessarily clicking through to multiple websites. That’s a big shift!

For years, business owners were told that if they could get to the top of Google meant success. That visibility still matters, but the reality is that many customers make decisions before they ever visit your website. The businesses that thrive in this new environment will be the businesses people already know and trust. They’ll be the businesses that consistently show up across channels. And they’ll be the businesses that AI recognizes as credible, authoritative sources.

In other words, the future belongs to businesses that are both remembered and recommended!

Being remembered is about human behavior. Long before someone needs a new roof, a financial advisor, or a dentist, they’re forming impressions. They hear a radio commercial on the drive home or they hear a friend mention a business by name. These moments matter because familiarity creates trust. When the need finally arises, people rarely start from scratch. They begin with the companies they already recognize.

That’s why brand building is becoming more important, not less. At the same time, it important to be recommended by AI overviews.

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best HVAC company in town or asks Google which local businesses have the strongest reputation, AI isn’t pulling names out of thin air. It’s looking for signals. Strong websites. Helpful content. Consistent business information. Reviews. Expertise. Authority.

Businesses that invest in those areas are creating a digital footprint that both search engines and AI platforms rely on when generating recommendations.

For local businesses, that’s actually good news. Many small and medium-sized businesses worry that AI will favor giant national brands. We see the opposite opportunity. Local businesses often have what large corporations struggle to create: genuine expertise, authentic customer relationships, and deep roots in the community.

The challenge isn’t whether local businesses have authority. The challenge is making sure that authority can be found. That’s where a branded search strategy comes in.

At Mid-West Family La Crosse, we’ve always believed that local businesses are the backbone of our communities. When a local business grows, it creates jobs. It supports nonprofits. It sponsors youth sports. It invests in community events. Success spreads throughout out the community.

That’s why helping small and medium-sized businesses succeed has always been our passion. What’s unique about our approach is that we’re positioned to help businesses on both sides of this new formula.

We help businesses stay top-of-mind through the power of reach. Through radio, streaming audio, video, social media, digital advertising, and community involvement, we help brands build awareness and before customers are ready to buy.

At the same time, we help businesses build their digital reputation. We do that through strong websites, SEO strategies like AIO, content creation, search marketing, and reputation-building strategies. We help businesses create the signals that search engines and AI platforms look for when making recommendations.

Most marketing companies focus on one side or the other. We provide a holistic approach.

Because the future isn’t about clicks. It’s about trust. It’s about being remembered by the people you serve and recommended by the technologies your customers use to source answers. If your ready to grow in a zero-click results world, now is the time to start building your strategy.

At Mid-West Family La Crosse, we’re ready to help!
