It’s Time to Thrive Not Just Survive!

The changing season has me excited to wake up my bee hives and get the crew started on making honey. I’m fascinated with these insects and enjoy journeying between the frames of comb to draw comparison between the intricacies of the hive and building a good business. Let’s start with the 3 kinds of bees existing in every healthy colony.

The first is the Drone Bee.

The drone bee doesn’t get much credit. Always a male, he’s often thought of as only looking to please the Queen. I like to think of him as helping to create more workers. The hive wouldn’t succeed without more workers and good training. Enough of me justifying the drone – back to business. Think of this bee as a very… social bee. The networking, marketing and client contact bee. Important in any business. He’s the one making Tik Tok’s all day long! Snapping pictures for the hives Instagram.

Then there’s the Worker Bee.

This one gets the jobs done. Always a female, she has a to-do list and strategically checks off each task as she completes it. She lives up to the label of, “busy as a bee.” She updates the website, sends the emails, balances the books. Always on the move, the worker bee does the work! She is willing to support the queen bee in the preparation and execution. Mrs. Worker, you have a lot of work to do. The leader is counting on you.

And finally, there is the Queen Bee.

She is responsible for the growth of the hive with her eggs. (That the drone helped fertilize – let’s not forget.) She is vital to everything that happens in a healthy bee hive. She’s the leader, boss. She’s strategizing. Always making sure workers and drones are where they should be. Making sure she’s efficient. She’s always thinking about business.

Many of you are good at being a worker bee. Getting tasks marked off your list. But owners can get stuck here and keep from growing. Some of you like to be the queen. Planning and strategizing all day but not getting much work done. Many of us are drones out on social media every day, showing off. But drones don’t work with a strategy or follow up.

To build a good business you need to find balance and incorporate all 3 roles.

Spend some time being queen bee and dream, plan and strategize. All hives need a leader. Spend a little time being a worker growing and trying to reach new levels. If you’re like many business owners it’s time to focus on being a drone. Spend time being social, marketing, building trust, learning, getting to know people, building new clients.

It’s safer to be one of the bees but not the others. But we need to be all 3. When was the last time you spent quality time working ON your business, rather than just IN it? It might be time to add it in your calendar and schedule time to make sure your hive is set up to thrive not just survive!
