Operation Poinsettia

A long standing Holiday tradition, Operation Poinsettia, has been a staple of this magical season with WIZM over 35 years.

All of us at Mid-West Family look forward to this special day every year! We gather our teams, our vehicles and head out, delivering hundreds of these beautiful plants to area senior citizens living in La Crosse housing and nursing care facilities.

What is the meaning of poinsettias? Also known as the Christmas Star and Christmas Flower, it’s said that poinsettias’ association with Christmas comes from a Mexican legend. The story goes that a child, with no means for a grander gift, gathered humble weeds from the side of the road to place at the church alter on Christmas Eve. As the congregation witnessed a Christmas miracle, the weeds turned into brilliant red and green flowers.

Whether red, white or pink poinsettias, the December birth flower, symbolizes good cheer and success and are said to bring wishes of mirth and celebration.

We feel blessed to be a part of making sure everyone receives a gift and share in the miracle of this special season. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Special thanks to Dickenson Family Funeral Home, Rose Jewelers, Kish and Sons Electric, The Hunger Task Force, Quartz, Fossum Funeral Homes, and Wisconsin Insurance Center for their partnership in Operation Poinsettia.
